NHS WalesNovember 2018 - Présent

The All Wales Genomics Service (AWMGS) is the national clinical & laboratory genomics service for NHS Wales.

In this role I function as the enterprise design authority for the NHS genomics architecture for Wales, providing the necessary architectural and design direction based on the AWMGS and Genomics Partnership Wales (GPW) Target Operating Model.

My main objectives are to lead & drive through major changes & service improvements in the IT operations area & to deliver a portfolio of projects encompassing 3 diverse areas: a new Genomics clinical application; laboratory information management system & to replace the existing bioinformatics computing architecture. Achievements & ongoing initiatives include:-

Building an IT department from scratch including defining teams structures, roles and putting in place all of the supporting processes & procedures.

Migration of legacy data & implementation of a new Genomics clinical application & laboratory information management system. The main challenge was investigating the legacy application architecture which is over 15 years old and ensuring a safe approach for migration onto newer hardware and achieving it within the tight project timescales.

Leading the work to replace the existing AWMGS bioinformatics compute capability. Main challenge here was to implement change with as little disruption to the clinical critical systems as possible. Required co-ordination with teams across Advanced Research Computing at Cardiff (ARCCA), Atos, Dell EMC and Cardiff and Vale UHB IT.

Leading on site preparation, installation & support of the NovaSeq 6000 System, including ensuring that the sequencer is installed according to supplier specifications and safety regulations.

Leading workshops to drive through continual service improvement and adherence to ITIL processes with the aim of seeing a drop in major incidents & progress on the back log of outstanding IT task items.

Here my role was one of an Information Operations Manager within the Information Services Directorate. I was responsible for the NWIS Data
Acquisition and Enterprise Data Warehouse teams. My teams were distributed across two sites in Cardiff and Pontypool. My responsibilities included the design, planning, implementation and support of the NWIS ISD enterprise information architecture to agreed timescales and costs.
This role was tactical requiring a good understanding of how to translate strategy to deliverable objectives. Understanding and options appraising emerging technologies was equally important, with data science and architecture being a core part of the role. In this role I helped grow NWIS ISD capabilities in data science and advanced analytics concepts such as Machine
Learning and Natural Language Processing. I also helped grow capabilities using tools such as R, Python and Hadoop.
