Street ZebraJanuary 1999 - January 2001

Street Zebra was the leading national amateur sports hub, providing online registration, membership and a social component for thousands of leagues and intramural activities. A product of the incubator, Guidance, Street Zebra was not only exciting and progressive, its model was closely watched by Wall Street and emulated by other intranet businesses.

► Led design team and coordinated effort with developers to create Street Zebra 2,0 portal. Led usability sessions and provided results to senior leadership to justify changes.

► Redesigned national network of city tabloid publications to increase advertising revenue and provide improved editorial visibility.

► As part of Street Zebra’s external revenue strategy, I met with external clients to provide design and UI effort of the John Wooden Classic, Los Angeles Marathon, National Spirit Organization and other sports entities.

► The department I developed replaced Street Zebra’s advertising agency: all advertising, marketing and related duties were performed internally.

LabedaJanuary 1996 - January 1998

I provided creative direction in the action sports segment of skateboard and roller blade wheels. I helped significantly grow the company through adding marketing strategy and extensive rebranding to what was already the finest products in its category.

► Designed multiple elaborate large-scale tradeshow exhibits: hockey locker room, aluminum city complete with aluminum skate ramp. Coordinated transportation logistics, set-up, etc.

► Product naming as well as created product graphics and innovative packaging.

► Created numerous POS displays and signage.

► Developed advertising strategy and led creative to produce multi-segment advertising. Managed external vendors and artists.

► Nurtured professional skate team and pushed for product entry into the lucrative skateboard market.

Baja LifeJanuary 1992 - January 1996

I founded Baja Life magazine in the early nineties out of both a love for Mexico and its people, and a developing favorable business climate as result of the North American Free Trade Agreement. It’s an award winning publication focused on natural history, tourism and US/Mexico relations.

► Established relationships with Mexican and US governments, tourism departments and businesses on both sides of the border

► Responsible for all editorial content and creative direction of the publication.

► Supervised writers, photographers and the creative department.

► Negotiated newsstand distribution on both sides of the border including seat back distribution on Aero California.

► Created Baja Communications Group, an internal business group focused on serving business and government agencies south of the border with professional marketing and advertising services.

Atelier XJanuary 1988 - December 1992

Co-founded Atelier X, a boutique media company, to accomplish two goals: fill the technical production needs of regional agencies, and develop our special projects. The agency produced magazines, soundtracks, music, photography, high quality video and print media.

► Producer, client relations, studio designer, engineer and sometimes musician in the recording studio for mostly sound tracks with occasional artist or band sessions.

Passage ProductionsFebruary 1990 - November 1992

In partnership with David Brown of The Cousteau Society, I helped develop an interactive exploration concept serving the cruise industry. Passengers were able to communicate to divers live underwater while watching a live video image of the diver’s perspective by using two-way communication technology. Our program was an eco-tainment first.

Yamaha InternationalJanuary 1985 - January 1987

As a contract creative director for Yamaha Music, I created multi-media events for business meetings, education and trade shows. I conceptualized large budget productions with multiple entertainment components: multi-screen animation driven by large arrays of computer controlled projectors, video, live and recorded music and stage design. In addition, I created various marketing collateral pieces for multiple divisions within Yamaha.

► Event staging and multi-media design focused on maximizing the attendee experience in accordance with the budget.

► Conceived and created multi-media assets, video and computer controlled slide array elements. I worked with the in-house video team and external special effects houses to create the finished media.

► Coordinated production elements and timing with the business and support service vendors, i.e.; lighting and sound technicians, riggers, location managers and talent.

► Developed and created multiple marketing materials and campaigns across other divisions within the Yamaha enterprise.

Arden MayfairJanuary 1981 - January 1984

Arden Mayfair was a retail grocery organization operating in the western states under three brands, Arden Mayfair, Gelson’s and Bag and Save. I was responsible for producing all materials weekly for diverse geographic and demographic markets.

► Coordinated and created advertising for the western region grocery division: staff supervision, production and press checks of 32 weekly tabloid advertisements, writing and producing radio and TV spots, coordinating weekly in store signage. I oversaw all media buys and the development of a highly successful co-op advertising program.

► Designed, trained staff and implemented a state-of-the-art in-house graphic production center. In six months the center paid for itself while also serving other divisions as a profit center.

Tom SmisekJanuary 1978 - January 1979

A key advertising agency in Orange County, Tom Smisek had a collection of international clientele centered on motorsports. It was here that I first honed my true art director skills under the guidance of George Carson. I worked on Suzuki’s Rodger De Coster campaign, Goodyear Tires and a host of motorcycle and component manufacturers.

► Art direction, print media, brochures and advertisements.

► Photography assistant, on Dos Equis beer and Bassani pipes.

► Business development: I provided leads from the boating world that I had experience with, facilitated sales calls, and provided junior account services.

M & M PublicationsJanuary 1977 - January 1979

I showed up looking for an entry design role and two hours later left with plane tickets and a bag full of camera gear. M&M publications specialized in boating periodicals, Popular Performance Boat, and Race Boat and Industry News. It is here where I cut my teeth.

► Photojournalist focused on race action, covering industry leaders, racing personalities and innovation within the recreational boating and motor boat racing world.

► Art direction of both publications: duties included type spec, stat camera, paste-up, mark-up and vendor management of color separation provider and on-press checks.

► Editor of Race Boat and Industry News: managed writer and advertising relations, covered select races and industry stories to produce the monthly publication.

► I proposed to the publisher a magazine focused on the growing youth culture. I became editor-in-chief of FREEFORMS, and within 4 months it was on newsstands. It was unique in that it provided a showcase for individual action sports long before the X-Games existed. Content included skateboarding, hang gliding, snowboarding (interview with Jake Burton prior to production), rock climbing, kayaking, as well as other individual athletic achievements. The publication was well received, but never exceeded western state distribution.
