Flatiron HealthJanuary 2017 - May 2019

At Flatiron we use technology and organized data to learn from the experience of every cancer patient and improve their outcomes.

My day to day is a mix of distilling ideas from client conversations, identifying where our data may be able to deliver value against the challenging status quo, writing data pipelines (sql, python, pandas) and developing beta products (python, javascript) to test those hypotheses.

As a professional, I strive to fail fast and iterate furiously; I'm also known for asking lotsa questions. I spent a year scoping and developing software aimed at lowering financial toxicity incurred by patients as a consequence of staggeringly expensive cancer treatment costs. I also spent my last year there researching and developing software to help manage at-risk patients from ending up in the emergency room from avoidable symptoms (dehydration, acute iron deficiency, etc). This telemedics solution also aimed to provide a workflow and documentation process for "Do Not Resuscitate" and "Advanced Directive" conversations. When these documents are in place, painful conversations amongst family members can be less contentious, as expectations have been set by the patient. These documents can also lead to astronomical end-of-life cost savings to our healthcare system.

Tutored 10 students a semester (averaging 18 hours a week) in elementary and intermediate core economics classes, as well as a broad range of math courses (from introductory calculus to linear algebra).

Designed and coordinated an inaugural math coaching program targeted at freshmen with less extensive quantitative preparation. Independently taught pre-calculus to a group of 5 freshmen per semester. Responsible for assisting in the training of incoming tutors and creating three calculus modules for departmental distribution (each roughly 30 pages in length, explaining in detail the most challenging concepts covered in core calculus courses).
