Our project specifications and objectives were simply to “enable the business to follow a trade as it travels across systems in its life cycle”. The brief was designed to be vague to allow us to maximise our creativity skills and take the project in any direction we wanted. Using the current system as a guideline, we were able to better understand the project and narrow down the goals for it. Due to the scale of the project, we decided to focus on one specific area: Bonds.
Having been given a real life project that the business could use, especially of this scope for an intern, this has been a big learning curve for me as an individual. I had the opportunity to explore full stack development with real life systems while using technologies such as React, angular, dotnet core, Elastic Search, LogStash and C#.

Travelex operates a VAT refund service on behalf of HMRC at Heathrow airport.

In a typical day as a VAT Sales Consultant I would:
-> Serve on average approximately 40 – 60 customers during non-peak season and at least twice as many during peak season
-> Handle customer queries and concerns
-> Help passengers within the queues by aiding completion of VAT refund forms so when the customer reaches the counter, they receive a swift service
-> Maintain a tidy organised till and VAT paperwork
-> Correctly follow the HMRC rules for claiming VAT and other procedures

In a typical day as a VAT Admin I would:
-> Collect and Drop off tax Forms from/to Customs
-> Go through the tax forms (including European forms) from passengers and count the number of forms while also checking all the required details are attached, if not make note of this
-> Go through and Calculate Sales Revenue, Gross commission, Sales Invoices
-> Send off the completed excel sheets to the Team Manager and Head of business.
